Department of Social Communication

 

The Department of Social Communication was opened at the faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences by the order of the Chancellor of BSU in May 1999 «to ensure training of students specializing in Information and Communication and also to activate scientific research in the field of communicational processes in the modern society». O. Tereschenko (the Head of the Department), professor Dr. O. Manaev, associate professor N. Yefimova, assistant professors N. Yelsoukova, I. Krasav­tseva, V. Fours, lecturers I. Bourina, M. Mazanik, assistant M. Redni­kina were first people working at the department. Intensive spadework within the Belarusian-French-British project TEMPUS (1993-1997), opening of the Department of Information and Communication at the faculty of Philosophy and Economics (1997) and also long traditions of scientific research in the field of communication preceded creation of the Department.

The department conducts scientific and methodological work, including the preparation and publication of teaching aids and teaching and methodological complexes for disciplines taught by the faculty.

 

The Department of Social Communication has carried out the following research works:

  • «Status, Trends and Perspectives of the Information Society Development in the Republic of Belarus» (supervisor – Professor A.V. Rubanov, responsible performer - Ph.D. Associate Professor, O.V.Tereshchenko).
  • «The Internet as a Means of Implementing the Communicative Practices of Belarusian Youth» (supervisor and responsible executive – Associate Professor A.Ya. Sarna).
  • «Social Theory and Methodology of New Media Research: a Trilingual Dictionary-Reference Book» (supervisor – Ph.D., Associate Professor O. V.Tereshchenko).
  • «Belarusian Diaspora in Karelia: formation and integration processes (mid-twentieth and early twenty-first centuries)» (supervisor – Doctor of Science, Associate Professor Kalacheva II).

Today the Department of Social Communication is working on the following scientific topics:

  • «Social Risks in the Communication Space of Modern Society» (scientific leaders – Associate Professors N.A.  Yeltsukova, T.V. Kupchinova).
  • «Communicative Practices of Citizens in the Public Space of Minsk» (supervisor – Ph.D., Associate Professor of A.Ya. Sarna).

 

The staff of the Department organized and held the following conferences:

  • May 12, 2002 – International Scientific and Practical Conference «The Phenomenon of Communication in Social and Humanitarian Knowledge and Education»;
  • November 13-14, 2008 – II International Scientific and Practical Conference «Communication in Social and Humanitarian Knowledge, Economics, Education», following which a compilation was published;
  • March 29-31, 2012 – III International Scientific and Practical Conference «Communication in Social and Humanitarian Knowledge, Economics, Education», following which a compilation was published;
  • April 23-24, 2014 – International Scientific and Practical Conference «Organizational Communication»;
  • April 7-9, 2016 IV International Scientific and Practical Conference «Communication in Social and Humanitarian Knowledge, Economics, Education. Organizational Communication - 2016».

 

Teachers of the department take part in international congresses, conferences, forums, round tables, summer schools, seminars and other events. In 2016 the teachers of the department took part in 26 events, including participated in 11 International Scientific and Practical Conferences, the International Scientific Congress of Belarusian Culture, the International Congress of Researchers of Belarus, the International Scientific Seminar, the Russian Sociological Congress, in 3 Russian Scientific Conferences, in the National Forum of Working Youth in Minsk, in the National Scientific and Practical Round Table «The Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Rus and Samogitia 1566: to the 450th Anniversary of the Publication», in the Seminar «Modern Culture of Belarus: Trends and Challenges», in the XIII Scientific Conference dedicated to the memory of Professor I. L. Zelenkova, Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, BSU.

 

77 scientific papers were published by the staff of the department in 2016 (2 monographs, sections to 3 monographs, 3 educational and methodical complexes, 2 textbooks, 1 paragraph to the textbook, 27 scientific articles and 39 abstracts were published in conference proceedings).

 

Annually in the framework of the faculty conference «Man. Culture. Society» the Department organizes the work of sections on mass, organizational, Internet and marketing communications.

Students present the results of their research in the framework of the International Scientific and Practical Conference «Communication in social and humanitarian knowledge, economics, education» held by the Department.

Students of the Department annually participate in the National Competition of Scientific Works of Students. A number of student scientific works were awarded with awards and prestigious awards, diplomas of international competitions.

Teachers of the Department carry out the scientific management of the teaching and research work of the students of the department of social communications within the framework of the training practice, the management of course and diploma theses.

In 2016 the project of the Department of Social Communication «Workshop of the Sociocom» began its work. The project is aimed at professional definition, development of practical skills of students of the specialty «Social Communications» and students of other specialties of the faculty. Within the framework of the Workshop, professional master classes are held. Experts are invited as speakers in the field of marketing communications, marketing research, advertising, PR, HR, branding and other areas of communication. Graduates of specialties «Information and Communication», «Social Communications», «Sociology», as well as teachers of the department of social communication, take an active part in the Workshop.
